Students with additional needs

Wilsonton Special Education Program (SEP) offers students with a disability the flexibility of mainstream classes or SEP classes.

At Wilsonton State School we are committed to being Always Our Best by enhancing educational opportunities for all students. We create an environment where all students can:

  1. Be Respectful
  2. Be Safe
  3. Be A Learner

Our target group of students are students from Prep to Year 7 identified under the Education Adjustment Program who have a diagnosed disability in the following areas:

  • Intellectual Impairment
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder
  • Speech Language Impairment
  • Physical Impairment
  • Vision Impairment and Hearing Impairment.

Adjustments are made to enable students to access the curriculum, achieve curriculum outcomes and participate in school life.

Each student has a program individually tailored to suit their learning needs. We have some students in small classes working from an alternate program and some students who are supported in year level classes by SEP staff. Programs range from specialised individual and small group teaching of literacy, numeracy, communication and social skills; group work incorporating co-operative learning and peer modelling; to full inclusion in mainstream curriculum areas. Additional supervision is provided during the school day and at lunch times when necessary to support a student’s social and emotional development as well as their safety.

All students have an Individual Support Plan (ISP) that identifies specific priority goals and the teaching strategies and resources required to achieve these goals. ISPs are developed collaboratively with parents, teachers and therapists, as well as personnel from the other agencies to maximise learning outcomes for individual students.

When required, students can receive support from an Education Queensland Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Speech Language Pathologist, Guidance Officer as well as Advisory Visiting Teachers.

We are fortunate to have Advisory Visiting Teachers for Hearing Impairment as well as Teacher Aide Language Models (staff skilled in the use of Auslan) based at our school. We also offer a playgroup to children under the age of five with a Hearing Impairment.

Wilsonton SEP is staffed by dedicated and experienced teachers and teacher aides. They are committed to providing individual students with the level of support required as well as advocating for each and every student and providing a supportive environment for parents and caregivers.
